The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas mourns the death of our long time, beloved colleague, Rob Colwell, who recently died after a valiant battle against cancer. Rob was the Clerk of Court for the Bankruptcy Court since 2019. Before that he was the Chief Deputy Clerk for several years. Prior to joining the Clerk’s office, Rob served as a career law clerk for Judge Harold Abramson and then for Judge Harlin “Cooter” Hale. He was a tireless public servant in all of these roles.
Rob was an active member of the Dallas-Fort Worth legal community, including being a member of the John C. Ford American Inn of Court since it started. He served the Inn in many ways, including as a regular teacher for its chapter 11 course and hosting many Inn events at the courthouses. Rob was honored with the “Serjeant of the Inn” award because of his “sustained and remarkable contributions to the profession and community.” Rob also occasionally taught a Creditors’ Rights class at SMU Dedman School of Law.
Rob was a graduate of the SMU Dedman School of Law and received his Bachelor’s degree from TCU. He was a devoted husband, father, friend to many, and man of great faith. He was a man of great integrity who humbly set an example for all. He will be missed more than words can express.
